A graduate from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia, Ooi Chean Hong worked in an Australian practice between 1982 to 1985.
Upon returning to Malaysia in 1985, she was attached to the Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang where she remained until 1990. Her five-year attachment with the local authority has enabled the office to adopt efficient working relations with the authorities.
In 1990, Ooi Chean Hong joined a local practice in Penang and a year later, she formed the partnership of ARKITEK OA with Oh How Tat
Ooi Chean Hong served as a member of the PAM Northern Chapter committee for two terms from 1992 to 1994. Since then, she has continued to support the organisation in their pursuit of excellence in the profession.
She has worked extensively with foreign consultants in the design of healthcare and institutional facilities. Her experience in hospital planning and design has seen the successful completion of the Penang Adventist Hospital and KPJ Specialist Hospital, as well as providing hospital planning consultancy for several hospital projects in the northern region.
Her work in institutional projects include, the Kolej Damansara Utama Penang Campus, Wawasan Open University Penang Campus, as well as the recently completed Prince Of Wales International School at Botanica C.T. Penang.
Ooi Chean Hong’s special interest and passion for heritage has also seen the completion of restoration projects which include amongst others, the Penang Municipal Town Hall, Homestead (Chancellory Building of the Wawasan Open University) as well as Soonstead / Northam Lodge for Bayview Hotels Sdn. Bhd. Her background in performing arts has seen her participation in numerous stage set designs for opera productions in Penang, thus garnering knowledge on the requirements for design of auditoriums, as well as acoustics.
Since taking over the helm of ARKITEK OA in March 2009, Ooi Chean Hong has aspirations to take the firm to greater heights. As a continuing contribution to the profession, she will continue to train young aspiring architects practising in the firm.
